Helping Your Dog Adjust to a New Baby

Bringing home a new baby can be such a beautiful and life-changing transition—but it’s not just a big shift for you. It’s a huge adjustment for your furry first baby, too.

As therapists, parent coach, and sleep consultants (and a serious dog lover!), we often talk with families about how to support their dog during this tender transition. Our dogs are deeply intuitive and attuned to our energy. They feel the changes—new routines, new smells, new sounds—and they’re often just trying to make sense of it all, right alongside you.

Here’s the good news: with a little preparation and a lot of love, you can help your pup feel safe, secure, and still very much part of the family.

Start with gentle prep during pregnancy.
Begin making small shifts before baby arrives—like practicing quiet time near the bassinet, playing baby sounds in the background, or introducing new boundaries (like keeping the nursery door closed sometimes). This helps your dog gradually adjust, instead of everything changing all at once.

Keep their routine as consistent as possible.
Dogs thrive on predictability. So even when life feels upside down, those simple things—walks at the usual time, feeding schedules, cuddle time on the couch—can offer huge comfort.

Give them safe space.
Just like babies, dogs need downtime too. Create a calm, cozy spot that’s just theirs, where they can retreat when they need a break from the hustle and bustle of baby life.

Honor their feelings.
Some dogs will be curious and affectionate right away. Others may need more time. Both are okay. Give lots of positive reinforcement and try to notice those subtle cues—just like you do with your baby. Connection starts with attunement.

Include them in your bonding moments.
Whether it’s a walk with the stroller or snuggling up during a contact nap, small moments of togetherness help remind your pup they still belong. You’re building a new rhythm together.

And hey—give yourself some grace, too. It’s totally normal to feel stretched thin trying to meet everyone’s needs. You’re doing such loving, intentional work, even in the messy, imperfect moments.
